Six-Figure Impact Demands Six-Figure Communication — Including Webcam Presence
It still surprises me how many smart, experienced professionals fall down on this point. I’d like to offer a few tips to the many talented individuals who deserve the positions they’re applying for but aren’t quite cutting it in virtual interviews.
People with impressive résumés and real track records are losing out on roles—not because they can’t do the job, but because their virtual presence doesn’t match the level of responsibility and salary they’re aiming for. When the camera turns on, everything changes—and a lot of candidates underestimate that.
What I’ve Witnessed
Over the course of many interviews, I’ve seen the same patterns repeat:
- Joining late because the link, password, or platform throws them off.
- Inappropriate backgrounds or informal dress—because it’s “just a virtual call.”
- Wrestling with mute, camera, or screen share in the opening minutes.
- Dim lighting or awkward camera angles that completely undermine their presence.
- Cluttered or noisy backgrounds that make it hard to focus on their words.
- Tones that swing from overly stiff to far too casual—sometimes even standing the entire time like it’s a casual chat.
None of this is about intelligence. It’s about the signals you send in a very short window of time. At the compensation level many candidates are targeting, those signals matter—a lot.
What Hiring Managers Are Really Thinking
For senior roles, hiring managers are asking much more than “Can they do the tasks?” They’re looking deeper and wondering:
- Would I trust this person to lead a critical client call over Zoom?
- Do they come across as steady, clear, and credible when things go wrong?
- Can they influence people they may rarely, if ever, meet in person?
If you struggle through a one-hour virtual interview, it plants a seed of doubt. And when there are multiple qualified candidates, doubt often decides the outcome.
Virtual Communication Is a Core Skill
At this stage, virtual communication is not optional—it’s a core business skill. Treat it like one.
A Few Simple Tips
- Join the call smoothly and on time.
- Master the basics—mute, camera, chat, and screen share—without fumbling.
- Show up clearly on screen, with decent sound and lighting.
- Keep the camera at eye level to maintain engagement and connection.
- Stay composed when something glitches; it’s a small test of leadership presence.
- Do a test run—hop on a call with a friend or record yourself to spot adjustments.
None of this is complicated, but doing it instantly separates professionals who take virtual presence seriously from those who still treat it like an afterthought.
